SEMINAR: Users Dream, Computers Sleep: An Open Source Brain Computer Interface

Abstract: A single channel electroencephalogram biofeedback amplifier will be built from parts ordered online and based open source instructions. This amplifier will be pieced together with little production cost and will be used to detect changes in the brain activity of the user; activity which associated with the closing of the eyes and sleep. Software will be developed to filter and interpret these amplified electrical signals received via non-invasive electrodes placed on the user’s scalp. Once amplified and transferred to a computer through a serial port, the filtered signal changes will be interpreted by software based on open source programming libraries. The resulting filtered output will instruct the operating system to shut down the computer in the event that the user falls asleep. The software will then be adapted to multiple users. Notes about how variables should be modified for individual users will be recorded.
Presenter: Joshua L. Bradford graduated from The University of Texas at Brownsville with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science in December 2009. She is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies in Computer Science expecting to graduate this coming spring. Bradford’s areas of interest are brain-computer interfaces, signal processing, and advanced manufacturing processes. He is a believer that technology can enhance human life and that one day machines and man will merge to advance human evolution.
