The Vienna State Opera is arguably the most prestigious opera house in the world. It is certainly one of the busiest, with an average of only ten days when the theater is dark during the opera season (roughly September through June).
The world’s greatest opera stars perform at the State Opera house. During the Vienna Festival, the opera house schedules many of its best productions and therefore attracts the best-known singers at this time. The dates of UTB’s Study Abroad in Vienna program are carefully chosen to coincide with the Festival, so as to provide UTB students ample opportunity to hear these great artists.
Two other opera venues also provide high quality productions during the Festival as well as all year round. The Volksoper is Vienna’s home to operettas, light operas and musical theatre productions. In addition, the Theatre an der Wien is the setting for less grandiose but still high-quality productions of traditional and avant-garde operas. This theater is historically significant in that it is the theater built by Emanuel Schickaneder (Mozart’s producer and librettist for The Magic Flute) with the money he made from The Magic Flute.
