about us

Director's Welcome

Join us for our 26th season of the UTB/TSC Patron of the Arts. The idea for the Patron of the arts series started in the season of 1984-1985 when a former Fine Arts Department chair approached UTB/TSC President Juliet V. Garcia, who was then the dean of the College of Liberal Arts. The concept was to provide the community and the students with an opportunity to hear professional guest artists perform live music on campus so that they could listen and learn from the experience. Another part of the concept was to present faculty members and students alongside the guest artists in order to showcase our considerable talent and preparation this is also the approach that we employ in the visual arts.

This will be the first full season of concerts at The Arts Center. Guest ensembles include the Daedalus Quartet (New York City) and the Timm Woodwind Quintet (Baton Rouge.) The Semplice Duo was a recent winner of the Emerging Artists Series Competition. Soloists include the Guitar Foundation of America Grand Prize Winner, Florian Larousse (France) and Brownsville native, Michael Callas, bass-baritone (New York City). Three renowned marimba performers, Keiko Kotoku (Japan), Israel Moreno (Mexico) and Ney Rosauro (Brazil) will perform with our student percussion ensembles creating a grand spectacle on our new stage. In March, piano faculty members will offer a piano festival just to mention one of the interesting concerts which we offer. Our art offerings will be fascinating and provocative. With over 90 events, there will be something of interest for everyone.  Only with continued support, will we be able to offer superlative concerts and art exhibitions. We look forward to seeing you.

Thank you for your support of the arts in BROWNSVILLE!
