Welcome to the Department of Modern Languages at the University of Texas and Texas Southmost College in Brownsville, a dynamic community of distinguished faculty with widely varying backgrounds. The Department of Modern Languages provides programs of study in various languages designed to develop effective oral and written communications skills and the cultural knowledge needed to participate in the global society. The department continues to expand its General Education course offerings, which currently include Spanish, French, German, Italian, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese and American Sign Language.

In addition to its commitment to General Education, the department seeks to maintain the quality and expand the scope of its undergraduate and graduate degree and certification programs. Our department offers undergraduate programs in Spanish and Translation; graduate programs which include a Diplomate in Hispanic Language and Culture, a Master of Arts in Spanish, a Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies (M.A.I.S), a Graduate Diplomate in Translation and MA in Spanish Translation and Interpreting, and Minors in Spanish, French and Translation Studies.
