Biography:

Anthony Knopp was born and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota, receiving history degrees from the University of St. Thomas (BA) and the University of Minnesota (MA). After brief stints teaching high school, he came to Texas as an instructor at San Antonio College. Knopp engaged in doctoral studies in history at Texas Tech University and received the Ph. D. in 1973. After four years teaching at his undergraduate alma mater he returned to Texas as an instructor at Texas Southmost College, serving as chairman of the Social Science Department for 10 years. Upon retirement from UTB he was named Emeritus Professor of History. He continues to teach history and geography courses.

Knopp’s scholarly career has been devoted to local and border history, and he has coauthored four books and numerous articles related to those topics. He has been actively involved in various local and regional historical organizations, serving three years as president of the Brownsville Historical Association. He is also active in civic affairs, serving for years on the Brownsville Heritage Council, and providing commentary and analysis to the media on local political affairs.
