Scholarships

Rudy de la Garza Scholarship

Outstanding undergraduate and graduate history students are encouraged to apply for the Rudy de la Garza History Scholarship. To qualify for consideration, undergraduate applicants must be history majors who have completed a minimum of 60 academic hours by the time of the award, have earned a minimum 3.0 GPA in history with a cumulative GPA of 2.5, and qualify for financial aid. Graduate students who have been admitted unconditionally to the Master of Arts in History program, have their Programs of Study (POS) on file with the Office of Graduate Studies, and qualify for financial aid are also eligible. Rudy de la Garza History Scholarships are awarded on the basis of demonstrated academic merit in the study of history and financial need. Scholarships are for up to $1,000 per semester with the possibility of renewal.

Application materials include a completed and signed application form, an unofficial transcript, a written statement of 500 words explaining why history matters, and one copy of a paper you have written for a history class.

Incentive Scholarship in History

Scholarships are $1,000.00 for the academic year.
Eligibility Requirements:

  • Undergraduate history majors only
  • 3.0 Minimum GPA
  • Enrolled at least half-time with 3 credits at 3000-4000 level
  • Junior or senior status, 60-150 credit hours earned
  • Texas resident and considered “in-district” student by Office of Admissions
  • Not in default on student loans

Application Requirements for the Incentive Scholarships include:

  • Completed and signed application form
  • Unofficial transcript
  • Written statement of 500 words explaining your academic and professional goals
  • One copy of a paper you have written for a history class

Talent Scholarship in History

Scholarships are $500.00 for fall, spring or summer.
Eligibility Requirements:

Undergraduates:

  • History majors with 60 academic credit hours
  • 3.0 Minimum GPA

Graduates:

  • Must be admitted to Master of Arts in History program or the Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in history
  • Program of Study (POS) must be on file with the Office of Graduate Studies
  • 3.0 Minimum GPA

Application Requirements for the Talent Scholarships include:

  • Completed and signed application form
  • Unofficial transcript
  • Written statement of 500 words explaining your academic and professional goals
  • One copy of a paper you have written for a history class

Application Deadlines and Forms

Application deadlines for the de la Garza, Incentive, and Talent Scholarships are announced annually in March and October.

Application forms will be made available on the History Majors Blackboard site.

History Department Merit Scholarship

This scholarship of $500 is available to history majors who receive a nomination by a full-time member of the history faculty. It is based on a combination of academic achievement and financial need. Minimally, an applicant must be a full-time student taking at least 12 semester hours, possess a 3.2 grade point average, be either a junior (60-89 credit hours) or a senior (90 plus credit hours), have at least one semester remaining at UTB, and receive the necessary nomination. Those students nominated, who wish to be considered for this scholarship, must return a completed application by the last day in the month of April.
