English Department

In support of the University’s mission to develop knowledgeable citizens and emerging leaders and the College of Liberal Art’s intention to prepare individuals who have a broad knowledge of literature and a firm command of articulate expression, the Department of English at the University of Texas at Brownsville cultivates in students scholarly and creative achievement in both graduate and undergraduate studies in literature, language, and rhetoric/composition. We promote student literacy – specifically the abilities to read, write, and think critically –as well as an appreciation for the English language and its literatures; we encourage faculty to pursue excellence in teaching, foster collegiality, engage in scholarly research, and perform service to the university and community.”

To accomplish our mission, the Department of English offers the following general education courses and degree plans:

  • General Education courses in composition and literature for all undergraduate students (Study Abroad: Costa Rica Flyer​)
  • Bachelor of Arts in English
  • Bachelor of Arts in English with teacher certification in English Language Arts (4th – 8th grades) or (8th – 12th grades)
  • Master of Arts in English
  • Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies with an English concentration
