Constitution Day at UTB and TSC

Did you take a picture with President Obama? On Monday, September 17, 2012 the Center for Civic Engagement in collaboration with the Office of Student Life hosted Constitution Day at UTB on the Student Union Lawn. This event served to promote the U.S. Constitution. Students were able to learn the importance of the U.S. Constitution and the rights provided to them by it. Participants enjoyed popcorn, hot dogs, drinks and music while visiting various activity tables sponsored by students.

We were honored with the presence of District 38 State Representative Candidates, Eddie Lucio III, Nancy Mishou, and Alex Torres. All candidates had the opportunity to meet event participants throughout the event. Additionally, candidates participated in a Constitution Day Trivia Game alongside university students and later talked to the students about the importance of exercising their vote.

3rd Annual Wellness Fitness and Nature

On Saturday, April 21, 2012 the Center for Civic Engagement, the Department of Health and Human Performance, Economic Development and Community Services, and Campus Recreation joined together to host the 3rd Annual Wellness, Fitness, and Nature event. The event took place at Lincoln Park and provided the community with family friendly activities to promote health and wellness. The departments provided adult sports activities, Zumbatomic, Zumba, and children’s activities, and a healthy breakfast to all participants. Community partners, Rio Bravo Wildlife and Rodeo Dental were generous supporters of the 3rd annual event.
Alternative Spring Break 2012

The 8th annual Alternative Spring Break (ASB), hosted by the Center for Civic Engagement, The Office of Student Life, and Brownsville Parks and Recreation took place from March 12 – 14, 2012. The three day event consisted of a health fair, arts and crafts, and fun in the sun.

The 2012 ASB events were launched with a health fair open to the Brownsville community. Community partners generously gave of their time to make the even a success. With the generous contributions of Brownsville Community Health Center, Medwin Family Rehab, Healthy Communities of Brownsville, Su Clinica Familiar, Sears Optical, the UTB and TSC Women’s Soccer team, Ocean Dental and Rodeo Dental, we were able to bring about awareness of many health concerns that our community faces.

- Inspired by the community response, we kicked off day two and three with Arts and Crafts and outdoor sports activities. It was very nice seeing how the kids’ faces lite up while thy colored their bird houses and competed in game. Through the generosity of organizations like Avant water and Ice,
- El Buen Gusto Bakery, the Office of Student Life, and HEB, we were able to provide food for all volunteers and children in attendance as well as provide door prizes.

Halloween Fair

This Halloween was spook-tacular at Buenavida Housing Center where the Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) Scholars organized their 3rd annual Halloween fair. The CCE scholars were joined by their ghoul friends from the Accounting Society, Sigma Psi, and TWCO Ambassadors for Justice and Peace to give the kids from the center a big scare. Haunted houses, howling competitions, and donut eating contests filled the streets with ghostly greetings. GMS Waste Disposal, HEB, Chili’s, and Pizza Hut joined the cause as sponsors for the fangtastic prizes given out. It was an evening brewing with fun where the scholars and the Center for Civic Engagement reached out to the community once again. Next year join us for a spell!
Make A Difference Day
- Saturday morning, October 22nd 2011, UTB students gathered at South Lawn for Make A Difference Day. The students gathered with their classmates for a light breakfast and shortly after ventured off to their sites. The students were assigned a specific site around our community at which they would lend a helping hand. The excitement was expressed on the students' faces as they worked at the Glady's Porter Zoo, Animal Shelter, Sabal Palms, Border Patrol, and Ebony Lake ,just to name a few. We concluded the day with a picnic at South Lawn for the students and faculty. Big thanks to our sponsors Lone Star National Bank, GMS Waste Disposal, and of course, our wonderful students and faculty, we couldn't have done it without you!
Flex your voting muscles!

How physical did the Center of Civic Engagement get for Constitution day? Out of this world physical! “Flex your Voting Muscles” had a great turn out and as promised we had popcorn, drinks, games, prizes, and loads of fun! Students got down with musical chairs while dancing along to some 80’s hits. There was also a war of the sexes, tug-o-war that is! The students had tons of fun and received cool prizes which varied from gift cards and certificates from places such as Ihop, Chili’s, Lins, Carinos, Starbucks and Barnes & Nobels. The prizes don’t end there though, oh no. Dr. Pope hosted a Trivia game and all participants received a free pizza from Pizza Hut on 802 and the winner received a party package from Chuck E. Cheese. How cool is that?! Our main mission for Flex your Voting Muscles was to register students and faculty to vote and “flex” those voting muscles. Eddie Lucio III added a little “oomph” to our cause and stated how every person is privileged to have the right to vote. All and all we were able to register over 50 people but our mission is not over yet. Not even close! So go out, get yourself registered and exercise that right to vote! BIG THANKS to the all the sponsors mentioned above, the Rek Center, Dean of Students, Students life and everyone else that helped make this a successful event. ;D
Save Isla Blanca

How many times have you gone to the beach and realized that the image you had in your head doesn't match what you're seeing; soda cans, plastic bags, diapers, shoes, bottle caps, and the list goes on and on. Are these the things we want to be surrounded with when we think of lounging on a hot sunny day at the beach? NO WAY! That’s why the Center of Civic Engagement sought out to do something and make a difference at our Save Isla Blanca event, September 24th. The Center of Civic Engagement, UTB students, faculty and staff, and many other organizations teamed up to assist with the cleanup. We all made our way out to Isla Blanca to re-beautify our wonderful beach. Everyone strapped on their gloves, took hold of their trash bags and picked up tons of garbage. No trash was safe!! After a nice garbage hunt on the beach, everyone was rewarded with “Keep Your Trash Off My Beach!” t-shirts and scrumptious hot dogs and chips provided from H-E-B and Wal-Mart. Yum! Everyone left with a full belly and the satisfaction of knowing that our mission was accomplished.
