Mandatory advising

Students in selected populations are required (mandated) to attend an advising session at the Academic Advising Center in order to register.  This allows the University to ensure that proper and careful guidance is provided for those students whom we believe would benefit most from it.

All Freshmen students (<29 earned credit hours) must attend advising at least once each semester until 30 credit hours or more are successfully earned.  In the Freshman Mandatory Advising session, students will learn more about the following topics:

·         Choice of Major and Career Plans

·         Requirements of the Selected Program of Study

·         The Importance of the GPA

·         Study and Time Management Skills

·         Campus Resources for Academic Success

·         University Policies

Students who are placed on Academic Probation (GPA = <2.0) must also attend an advising session at least once a semester.  Students on academic probation can expect to learn more about the following topics:

·         The Importance of the GPA

·         Study and Time Management Skills

·         Campus Resources for Academic Success

Failure to attend Mandatory Advising for Freshman or students on Academic Probation will result in a block or hold placed on the student’s ability to register.  In other words, a student will not be able to register until they are cleared by an academic advising specialist after an advising session.

Advising sessions can be completed via phone, email, or in person. Students are encouraged to visit the Advising Center for the most effective and efficient experience. An advising session takes about 30 minutes.  Students who wait until the last minute to schedule an appointment will encounter long wait times!

All students can benefit from academic advising, and all students are welcome and encouraged to visit the Academic Advising Center.
