Aura Salazar named Outstanding International Female Student

International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8 in many countries in the world.  As part of their recognition of this important day, the UTB Office of Global Engagement solicited nominations campus wide for the Outstanding International Female Student Award.  Two UTB Chess Team members, Woman International Master (WIM) Aura Salazar from Colombia and WIM Daniela De la Parra from Mexico, were among the 12 students nominated for this award.  At a ceremony on March 6 in Salon Cassia, WIM Aura Salazar was announced as the 2014 recipient of this prestigious award.

WIM Aura Salazar is a junior Mathematics major from Medellin, Colombia.  In addition to being ranked among the top female chess players her age in the world, Aura is an excellent student, with a Grade Point Average (GPA) over 3.9.  She has been ranked as the top female chess player in her age group on the continent for the past 5 years, and in 2011 was ranked the #4 female in the world in her age group.

WIM Daniela De la Parra is a senior Accounting and Finance major from Durango, Mexico.  In only 5 semesters at UTB, Daniela has completed over 100 hours of college credit with a perfect GPA.  She is one of the most decorated female chess players in the history of chess in Mexico.  This past fall, Daniela won the gold medal while representing UTB at the Campeonato PanAmericano de Ajedrez Universitario.

We are very proud of Daniela and Aura for being nominated for this very important award.  With such impressive accomplishments both in the classroom and on the chessboard, it must have been extremely difficult to chose between these amazing young ladies!
