Responsibilities:
As Associate Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Sylvia Leal reports to the Vice President of Student Affairs and is responsible for managing all aspects of Pre-College programs and providing leadership to the division in grant writing, web management, and the implementation of marketing strategies that allow us to be more visible in the community.  In addition, she is responsible for the management of unit assessments and provides assistance and training to all department directors in the development and assessment of goals and division strategic planning.  Dr. Leal also provides division wide assistance in the areas of research and data collection, staff development and revenue generating initiatives.  Because of her background in curriculum and instruction, she works closely with the Student Success component which provides students access to student support programs and services that contribute to their academic success, retention and timely graduation. 

Previous Positions and Where:

Dr.  Leal has over twenty years of educational experience that includes classroom teaching experience as a bilingual educator, a teacher of the gifted and talented, curriculum specialist, and administrative experience.   Most notable are her experiences at the Region One Education Service Center in Edinburg, Texas where she assisted educators among 38 school districts improve the teaching and learning capacity of students across south Texas through various leadership opportunities as an Inclusion Specialist, Science Specialist, and Curriculum Specialist. 

As the Program Coordinator of the Region One GEAR UP initiative she assisted with rigorous college preparation for over 8,000 students at 29 high minority high poverty high schools throughout the region.  In that capacity, she assisted the program to develop and implement several innovative initiatives to support college preparation for first generation minority students.
