Office of the President - The University of Texas at Brownsville
NOVEMBER 27, 2012 FALL 2012 NO. 3

Dear Colleagues,

With the retirement of Chief Cardoza this month we are in the process of conducting a search for a new Director of Police and Safety. In the interim, I have appointed Ben Reyna as our Acting Director of Public Safety. As such, Mr. Reyna has full authority and oversight of the UT Brownsville Campus Police Department.

Mr. Reyna’s extensive experience in law enforcement includes 25 years with the Brownsville Police Department, serving 6 years as Chief of Police until his retirement, and as Director of the United States Marshals Service in Washington, D.C. He is well versed in issues and standards at the state level, having served as Presiding Officer of the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education.

Mr. Reyna will retain his duties as Assistant Provost for Governmental Relations as we approach a very important legislative year, and he will continue to report directly to the Provost on all governmental relations and public safety issues. Consistent with UT System-wide policy, Mr. Reyna will also consult, coordinate and report on public safety matters with the Office of the Director of Police at the University of Texas System.

We are very appreciative to Mr. Reyna for agreeing to lend his leadership at this important time as we continue our search for a permanent Director.
