Office of the President - The University of Texas at Brownsville
Dr. Juliet V. Garcia

Dear Colleagues,

Last week the University of Texas System Board of Regents affirmed their commitment to propel UT Brownsville’s future development by unanimously approving purchase of the La Estancia student housing complex.

Research shows, and we know from our own experience, that helping students get engaged on campus is key to increasing their academic success. Students who live in a residence hall while attending college have the advantage of being closer to classes, to their professors and to being able to more easily participate in campus activities. Students who live in residence halls also tend to develop closer relationships with each other, attain higher GPA’s, and manage their time more effectively. Purchase of this new student housing complex gives UT Brownsville an opportunity to establish a more vibrant living/learning community for our students.

Student Housing

The new student housing will be operated by UT Brownsville under a new name this fall and will serve students with in-house resident advisors and on-site campus security. The housing units, constructed in 2009, have many amenities including full kitchens, washers and dryers, living rooms, wireless Internet access, a swimming pool, sand volleyball and basketball courts, a club house, a movie theater, a computer lab and a large multipurpose room. It will provide housing for 429 students and is located adjacent to campus on more than 7 acres of land just a short walk from classrooms.

We are very appreciative to the many people on campus and at The University of Texas System who made this acquisition possible. We invite you to join us at the grand opening this August to usher in a new era of student living and learning at UT Brownsville.
