Master Chorale honored at TSC board meeting
BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS – MARCH 27, 2009 – The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College Master Chorale was recognized by the Texas Southmost College Board of Trustees at their Thursday, March 26 meeting for being musical ambassadors during their recent performance trip to Italy.
“We are here to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for making this opportunity a reality because we know without your support, your unbelievable support, these opportunities would not be possible, Master Chorale Director Dianne Brumley told board members.
The chorale traveled from Saturday, March 14 to Saturday, March 21 to perform at High Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, Sant’Andrea Della Valle Church in Rome, the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi in Assisi and Teatro San Romano in Lucca.
The trip also included seeing some of Italy’s historic sites, like the Trevi Fountain and the Coliseum in Rome and the Tomb of St. Francis of Assisi.
“There’s nothing more fantastic and it warms my heart to see an opportunity like this presented to you for the very first time, trustee Dr. Roberto Robles said. “You’re on center stage for the world and representing the Rio Grande Valley. That must have been a great experience for you all.
Brumley said educators must offer extraordinary opportunities and experiences to provide meaningful educations to students, particularly those from disadvantaged and remote backgrounds.
“The power of music is a glorious thing, and if we ever questioned that truth, we were given a firsthand lesson as the Master Chorale journeyed through Italy bringing their powerful and glorious music making to the halls of historic, artistic and religious significance, Brumley said.
Several chorale members attended the board meeting and sang two songs for the trustees and attendees that were performed on the Italy tour: “Va’, Pensiero by Giuseppi Verdi and “May The Lord Bless You And Keep You.
“It’s incredible to have this talent on campus and we are so very proud of you, trustee David Oliveira said. “Thank you for making us proud in Italy and across the United States.
The Italy trip marks the second time the 6-year-old Master Chorale has traveled overseas to perform. The first trip was in March 2007 when the group opened St. Patrick’s Day festivities at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin, Ireland.
“These international invitations and performances truly are indicative of the high profile that our music program at UTB/TSC has attained and the tremendous opportunities we can offer musically gifted students in the Rio Grande Valley, said Dr. Daniel J. Heimmermann, dean of the UTB/TSC College of Liberal Arts.
