Students Reminded of Endowment Scholarship Application Deadline, Oct. 26
BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS – OCTOBER 5, 2012 – October 26 is the deadline for students to apply for endowment scholarships at The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College.
“There are many excellent scholarships available for our students,” said Mary Comerota, Director of Financial Aid. “Some are for certain majors, yet many are non-specific. We encourage all students to contact the Office of Financial Aid in Tandy Hall to see what scholarships might work for them.”
Joey Sanchez, now in his final semester and student teaching at Harlingen High School South, financed his education through scholarships.
Sanchez did not qualify to receive federal financial aid, yet his scholarships and his campus job enabled him to cover his expenses. He will graduate – debt-free – with a Bachelor of Arts in social studies in December of this year.
In his senior year, along with receiving a STARS scholarship, Sanchez received four other scholarships, including the Marylyn Burns Memorial Endowment Scholarship and the Morris Edelstein Endowment Scholarship.
“I am grateful for all the scholarships I have received throughout my four years at UTB, especially those from endowments, since they are gifts by individuals,” he said. “Without the generosity of these donors I would not be where I am today.”
Sanchez said he is enjoying his student teaching, feels he is walking into his career being well prepared, and he is thankful that all his hard work is paying off and he will soon be a full-time educator.
“Everything is going as planned,” Sanchez said. “I am creating lessons, quizzes and tests, the students are responding to my presentations, and they are asking a lot of questions. That shows me that they are interested in the material I am covering, so I take that as a good sign.”
