Run and Walk to Benefit Vela Endowment at UTB
event will take place Saturday, Oct .19 at the Brownsville Event Center
located off of Paredes Line Road. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m.with the race
set to begin at 8 a.m. There will be three options for runners and bicyclists
from the 60 mile bike tour, a bike ride of 15 miles and a 5K walk/run.

“The ride/run/walk really caught on, drawing in a younger, family crowd, and we are
keeping the entry fee reasonable; the whole idea is to raise awareness and
promote education through scholarships,” said son Filemon Jr., who along with
Rafael and sister Sylvia organize the annual event with a cadre of volunteers
consisting of family and friends.

Filemon B. Vela died at the age of 68 in April 2004. With his wife, Blanca
Sanchez Vela, married to Filemon for 44 years, the couple staunchly supported
their family, their community and their church.
