Music Students Sparkle with Sounds of the Season in ‘Home for the Holidays’

BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS –  DEC. 3, 2013 – The Music Department at The University of Texas at Brownsville will signal the beginning of the holiday season with its third annual “Home for the Holidays” fundraiser concert at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8 at the TSC Arts Center.

Holiday Concert on Sunday to Benefit Scholarships

Concertgoers are encouraged to arrive early, between 6:30 and 7:30 p.m., to visit with Santa and his elves in the Arts Center’s lobby that has been decorated for the season.

“Guests will be greeted by Christmas carolers as they enter the lobby with its beautiful 15-foot tree,” said Dr. Katherine Geeseman, Assistant Professor of music. “Piano faculty and their students will treat the early arrivals to favorite holiday songs on the lobby piano. Everyone can take their time and have their photo taken with Santa and his elves.”

The concert will feature all the premiere ensembles of the Department of Music, including the UTB Symphony Orchestra, the University Chamber Singers and the Master Chorale, the UTB Symphonic Band, the Jazz Band and the Guitar Orchestra, playing a wide selection of seasonal favorites from traditional carols to lively favorites.

“Our talented students have been anticipating this event for the entire semester,” said Dr. Tom Nevill, Professor and Chair of the Department of Music. “This is an important fundraiser for music scholarships.”

This year the concert will also include a special group, the BSMART youth orchestra, performing at the beginning of the concert. The BSMART youth orchestra, consisting of young string students from around the Lower Valley, is sponsored by the community and UTB.

“The ensemble is under the direction of Olga DeLeon, a graduate of our music program, and we are very proud of her and to have these young musicians as a part of the program,” said Geeseman.

Another treat for the evening will be a combined orchestra/band/choir performance of a new composition written by Mathew Campbell, a junior music education major. Campbell wrote the piece especially for the ensembles to premiere at the Home for the Holidays concert.

The concert will conclude with a performance of the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s “The Messiah.”

Tickets are $15 for orchestra seating and $10 for balcony seating. Children under 12 and students with an ID may attend for $5.

Tickets can be purchased online or through the Patron of the Arts office. For more information, contact Dr. Katherine Geeseman at 956-882-7403 or katherine.geeseman@utb.edu or contact the Music Department at 956-882-8247.
