Music Students Sparkle
with Sounds of the Season in ‘Home for the Holidays’
BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS – DEC. 3, 2013 – The Music Department at
The University of Texas at Brownsville will
signal the beginning of the holiday season with its third annual “Home for the
Holidays” fundraiser concert at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8 at
the TSC Arts Center.

his elves in the Arts Center’s lobby that has been decorated for the season.
“Guests will be
greeted by Christmas carolers as they enter the lobby with its beautiful
15-foot tree,” said Dr. Katherine Geeseman, Assistant Professor of music. “Piano faculty and their
students will treat the early arrivals to favorite holiday songs on the lobby

The concert will feature all the premiere ensembles of
the Department of Music, including the UTB Symphony Orchestra, the University Chamber Singers and the
Master Chorale, the UTB Symphonic Band, the Jazz Band and the Guitar Orchestra,
playing a wide
selection of seasonal favorites from traditional carols to lively favorites.
“Our talented students have been anticipating this event
for the entire semester,” said Dr. Tom Nevill, Professor and Chair of

This year the concert
will also include a special group, the BSMART youth orchestra, performing at the beginning
of the concert. The BSMART youth orchestra, consisting of young string students
from around the Lower Valley, is sponsored by the community and UTB.
“The ensemble is under
the direction of Olga DeLeon, a graduate of our music program, and we are very
proud of her and to have these young musicians as a part of the program,” said
Another treat for the
evening will be a combined orchestra/band/choir performance of a new
composition written by Mathew Campbell, a junior music education major.
Campbell wrote the piece especially for the ensembles to premiere at the Home
for the Holidays concert.
The concert will
conclude with a performance of the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s “The
Tickets are $15 for orchestra seating and $10 for balcony
seating. Children under 12 and students with an ID may attend for $5.
