Deadline Extended Until April 1 for All Scholarships, Including New Stripes Scholarships

 
BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS – MARCH 18, 2014 – The Office of Financial Aid at The University of Texas at Brownsville has announced a two-week extension for scholarship applications for the upcoming 2014-2015 academic year. The new deadline for all scholarships, including the new Stripes College Scholarship, is Tuesday, April 1.
 
UTB recently received a $40,000 donation for student scholarships from Stripes Convenience Stores, funding that resulted from a four-week, in-store fundraising campaign that was held at all Stripes locations from December 2–29, 2013. During the one-month campaign, customers had the opportunity to purchase one-dollar Stripes College Scholarship Fund paper cut-outs to benefit local students in obtaining a college education.
 
 
“Young people are our future, and there’s no better investment we can make in the communities where we live and work than helping our youth go to college,” said Sam L. Susser, Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President of Susser Holdings Corporation, the parent company of Stripes LLC.
 
To apply for the merit-based Stripes Scholarship, students must be full-time students residing in Cameron County, have a minimum 2.5 grade point average and demonstrate involvement in community activities.
 
The Stripes Scholarships are now listed among other UTB General Scholarships that are administered by the UTB Financial Aid Office. Information on all scholarships, including the Stripes Scholarship, is posted online at the General Scholarships page that includes the Scholarship Guide and the General Scholarship Application.
 
A total of $530,000 was collected from all 575 stores in the Stripes operating area that encompasses Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma.
 
“This was the first year for Stripes to embark on this ambitious program; their goal was $400,000 that would enable them to award 400 $1,000 scholarships,” said Irv Downing, Vice President for Economic Development and Institutional Advancement. “To surpass that goal by such a large margin is truly an accomplishment – and we commend all Stripes store managers and employees, and certainly, we are grateful to the thousands of generous customers.”
 
The more than half million dollars raised from the in-store campaign is being distributed proportionately to colleges and universities within the operating area. UTB will designate $1,000 scholarships to 40 deserving students for the 2014-2015 academic year.
 
“As we look to the future, we believe that education is the key to unlocking the potential for success,” Susser said. “Today, historically disadvantaged students are not reaching the same level of educational attainment as the general population, and it is our hope that by partnering with our customers and our team members, Stripes can positively impact this critical issue.”
 
The scholarship awards will be selected and managed by the participating community colleges and universities enrolled in the program. Stripes Convenience Stores is underwriting all administrative costs to run the scholarship program.
