Dalí String Quartet to bring Classical roots and Latin soul February 7
BROWSVILLE, TEXAS –JANUARY 22, 2013-Classical roots and Latin soul come with the price of a ticket to the February Arts Center performance of the Dalí String Quartet.
Musical ambassadors from Venezuela and Puerto Rico, this accomplished group of award-winning solo and chamber artists boasts a playlist equally comfortable with composers from Beethoven to Villa-Lobos will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7.
Dalí String Quartet
Visiting the Rio Grande Valley as part of The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College Signature Series, the youthful Dalí Quartet is in part a product of Venezuela’s social and music education movement called El Sistema, or The System. As a string quartet, the four have taken their distinctive talents around the world, from Carnegie Hall, to the festivals and concert venues of Europe and Asia.
Dr. Dan Barnard, Arts Center Director, said the Dalí Quartet performance will richly reward classical music lovers while offering an accessible and enjoyable evening of entertainment to all.
“Dalí is a very versatile quartet. They can play a program of classical standards or they can play an evening of quartets by Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos and Argentinean composer Alberto Ginastera,” said Barnard. “It’s another way to make legitimate classical works accessible to people who are maybe new to that genre.”
Now based in Philadelphia, the Dalí Quartet currently includes Swiss-Venezuelan Simón Gollo and Venezuelan Carlos Rubio on violin, and Venezuelan Adriana Linares on the viola. Puerto Rican cellist Jesús Morales rounds out the ensemble, which specializes in Spanish and Latin American music, along with the beloved masterpieces of Central Europe.
Critics have praised the quartet’s “big, lush sound” and performances that “pulsed with excitement.” The group also is involved in music education and performing educational concerts, as well as with organizations that encourage minority and youth participation in classical music.
Courtyard by Marriott is sponsoring the Dalí Quartet’s visit to Brownsville. Their performance continues a Signature Series theme of honoring the Valley’s Latin roots with performances of excellence and distinction.
