Library Instruction Mission Statement

The mission of the Bibliographical Instruction Services at the University of Texas at Brownsville is to teach students how to search, evaluate and synthesize information to assure the skills and knowledge base necessary to be lifelong and successful learners. Instruction is modeled after the Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education set forth by the Association of College and Research Libraries. These standards include the ability to determine the extent of information needed; access the needed information effectively; evaluate information and courses; incorporate selected information into one’s knowledge base; effectively use information to accomplish a specific purpose; and understand economic, legal, ethical and social information use issues.
