Master of Science in Nursing Program

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The College of Nursing offers a graduate program of study leading to the Master of Science in Nursing which produces a nursing leader in the areas of nursing education, or nursing administration.

NURSING DEPARTMENT MISSION

In keeping with the mission of the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College and the mission of the College of Nursing, the mission is to provide high quality vocational, associate, undergraduate and graduate nursing education programs which are fostered and exemplified by excellence in teaching, service and research.  The aim is to facilitate educational access and academic excellence through innovative delivery systems that are learner-centered, success-oriented, and technologically-responsive.

MSN PROGRAM OUTCOMES

The major outcomes of the graduate program are to develop the ability

• To translate knowledge from the health and social sciences to individuals, families, aggregates and communities of diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds through planned programs and advocacy;
• To integrate knowledge about individuals, families, aggregates and communities with clinical and theoritical knowledge of health promotion, disease prevention, and illness;
• To utilize research including evaluation of research, application of principles of research in problem identification and the application of research findings;
• To assume leadership in the application of multiple strategies for interventions related to problems and aspirations of individuals, families, aggregates and communities in relation to policy, organization and financing of health care;
• To function in a role that incorporates nursing theory, research and practice into interdisciplinary activities of nursing practice;
• To function within the graduate nursing role utilizing sound ethical decision making-evidenced in research, evaluation, practice, leadership and management.
