Welcome to the Language, Literacy, and Intercultural Studies Department (LLIS) web page. This website is a valuable resource for you as you plan your educational future here at the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College.
LLIS is a new department that consists of faculty who teach courses in bilingual education, English as a second language, literacy, and intercultural studies. Our highly-qualified faculty are experts in these areas. They conduct research that is published in international, national, and regional journals, and they make presentations at international, national, regional, state, and local conferences. They also bring this level of expertise into their teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Faculty from the department teach key courses in the undergraduate teacher education program. These include the BILS courses that focus on teaching reading and content in bilingual classrooms, the EDLI courses that focus on teaching reading for second language students, the EDSL courses with a focus on teaching the foundations of English as a second language and ESL content, as well as the EDUC course that focuses on teaching special populations in culturally and linguistically diverse classrooms.
The language, literacy, and intercultural studies department offers the M.Ed. in bilingual education. Department faculty also teach the specialization courses for bilingual studies in the Ed.D. program as well as course in socio-cultural foundations of education.
At the doctoral level, LLIS faculty teach courses for the bilingual specialization and the literacy specialization as well as several of the core courses. As you can see, the LLIS department faculty teach courses that are integral to many of the degrees in the College of Education.
The Language, Literacy, and Intercultural Studies department is committed to you, our students. Faculty are available for advising at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Students interested in teaching linguistically and culturally diverse students will benefit from the teaching and advising the faculty provides. We are committed to offering the best possible experience for you while you are here at the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College as well as ensuring the best preparation for teaching students in the Rio Grande Valley and beyond.
