Disability Services

Eligibility For Disability Services

To be eligible for services, a student must:

  • Meet with the Disability Services Counselor/Coordinator to discuss needs and register for services
  • Provide current and valid documentation of a disability that requires accommodation.

All documentation must include a diagnosis and should include functional limitations. For students with learning disabilities, the preferred documentation is a "full and individual evaluation." Contact Disability Services at (956) 882-7874 for more information.

A disability is defined as any mental or physical condition that substantially limits an individual's ability to perform one or more major life activities. These disabilities may include: physical disabilities, learning disabilities, visual or hearing impairments, neurological impairments and psychological disabilities.

Whether a student wants to learn how to use assistive technology, or needs to take tests under special conditions, the Assistive Technology Lab and Testing Service can help.

The Assistive Lab’s specialized technology is helpful for students with a variety of disabilities. Depending on the disability, students can use:

  • Computers with speech, print and braille output
  • Braillers
  • Tape players and recorders
  • Closed circuit televisions

In addition, the Testing Service serves students with a documented need for testing accommodations. Special testing conditions may include extra time, individual testing, use of a reader, scribe, or assistive technology. Arrangements must be made in advance.

Contact Disability Services or the Assistive Lab for more information.

Disabled Parking Permits

Proof of disability is required. For information, contact the Campus Police Department at Cavalry Hall (544-8233).

At UTB/TSC, students with disabilities take an active part in campus life. Many do not need any special assistance. But for those who do, Disability Services is here to help. Our Counselor/Coordinator works with each student individually to arrange for accommodations, technology training, or other needs. To help meet students' special needs, we coordinate with other campus support services as well as with state agencies such as the Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services.
