Assistant/Associate Professor-Bioinformatics/Computational Biology (2 Positions)
Position Number: FY 12-105
Scope: This announcement invites applicants for tenure-track positions in bioinformatics/computational biology at the University of Texas at Brownsville, including possible joint appoints across campuses of the UT System such as the UT School of Biomedical Informatics, the UT Health Institute for Molecular Medicine, UT Health Science Center in San Antonio and the UT School of Public Health. For those with a passion and drive for conducting bioinformatics research as part of a large translational research network of investigators, joining this newly established team will provide intellectual space to contribute to current programs while developing new ideas and directions in bioinformatics and computational biology. Initially the program will focus on projects related to diabetes and obesity as part of a language translational research network on diabetes and obesity and related conditions. Position is contingent on grant funding.
Potential candidates will have strong research credentials and clear capabilities to develop and carry out bioinformatics/computational biological research in an interdisciplinary, collaborative and highly competitive environment. The bioinformatics/computational biology team will work in a network with those conducting epidemiologic and health behavioral research, as well as basic biomedical scientists working on in-vitro or animal models of diabetes and its related conditions. We anticipate that the bioinformatics faculty will interact with those in health sciences as well as those in the math, computer science, and biomedicine departments.
Education: Doctoral degree from an accredited institution with expertise in bioinformatics/computational and a burning desire to develop a solid research career is required.
Experience: Primary responsibilities will be to develop funded research programs, generate publications, and to provide limited teaching to graduate and undergraduate students. Computer programming skills (java, C++, R), proficiency with UNIX system, and mathematical modeling knowledge (e.g. hidden Markov model) are required. Postdoctoral experience in the application of bioinformatics to biomedical research is an asset. Successful candidates should show promise in scholarship as evidenced by a strong record of publications in referred journals and external funding.

Assistant/Associate Professor-Biomedicine (2 Positions)
Position Number: FY 12-104
Scope: The University of Texas at Brownsville is seeking two full-time tenure track faculty members in the Department of Biomedicine to address the neurological disease interface with diabetes mellitus and obesity in the framework of the Valley Rising STARS program, a State funded initiative that involves The University of Texas-Pan American and The University of Texas School of Public Health. Successful candidate may have joint appointments in the College of Biomedical Sciences and Health Professions, The College of Nursing and The College of Science, Mathematics and Technology with a primary responsibility to work for the Inter-Institutional Center of Medical and Clinical Informatics (under development). All applicants must have strong fundable research agendas in neuroscience, diabetes, obesity, to be able to significally contribute to projects related to chronic diseases as part of a large research network on diabetes and obesity and related conditions. Position is contingent on grant funding.
Duties: Primary responsibilities will include providing leadership in developing funded research programs in neuroscience/health at UTB, generating publications in peer reviewed journals, providing limited teaching to graduate and undergraduate students. Successful candidates are also expected to coordinate joint research across various campuses of the UT System that include but not limited to UT Brownsville, UT Pan American, and the UT School of Public Health.
Education: Ph.D. (or equivalent) in any area of neuroscience, medicine, public health or related health area from an accredited institution is required.
Experience: Knowledge and experience that have already resulted in strong list of publications in the field of neuroscience, diabetes, or obesity is required. Successful candidates should show strong research credentials and clear capabilities to develop and carry out neuroscience research projects relating to chronic diseases in an interdisciplinary, collaborative and highly competitive environment, as evidenced by a strong record of publications in refereed journals and a proven potential for securing external funding commensurate with rank. Two years of postdoctoral experience in the application of bioinformatics is required.

Scope: This position will involve teaching, service, and research in the Educational Leadership program. Specific responsibilities will include the teaching of graduate courses in the Master in Educational Leadership degree and in the Principal Certification Program. Specific teaching assignments for the position will be matched with departmental needs and candidate expertise. The applicant must be willing to support the College’s efforts toward NCATE accreditation by continuing to support course instructional and assessments aligned to the ELCC standards and NCATE expectations. Principal responsibilities include: teaching student advisement, serve on dissertation committees, and teaching and designing online courses; creating and maintaining technology systems to archive projects and data for the department. Assistant Professor in Exercise Science

Scope: This is a full-time tenure-track position that is anticipated to begin the Fall of 2013. Scope: The University of Texas at Brownsville is currently accepting applications for two senior faculty for leadership positions in the College of Education’s department of Language, Literacy, and Intercultural Studies. The department offers a doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction with a specialization in bilingual studies and a vibrant and growing masters program in bilingual education. These programs are offered on campus in Brownsville and using videoconference technology, multimedia instruction and blended learning in San Antonio and the Houston area. In addition, the department has a strong undergraduate teacher preparation program for bilingual candidates. These are full-time tenured positions to begin employment Fall 2013.

Duties: Lead different outreach activities at CGWA, including the Physics circus, open houses at the UTB Astronomical Observatory, and other outreach activities connected to the LIGO Scientific Collaboration outreach efforts.

- Actively participate in student recruitment activities.
- Seek grants to support education and public outreach and K-12 professional activities.

Education: PhD in Astronomy, Physics, Science or a closely related field is required.
