Hurricane Preparedness

Hurricane Season Begins SATURday, June 1

The 2013 hurricane season begins Saturday, June 1 and ends Saturday, November 30.

The university’s Emergency Response Officer, Rosemary Martinez, keeps the university up to date on developing and approaching storms on the Hurricane Alert page. The page has information on the current campus emergency level, closings and re-openings, department emergency plans, employee recall information and links to the National Weather Service’s National Hurricane Center and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Weather information will be posted on the university’s home page and the hurricane alert page.

Announcements and updates prior to, during and after a storm will be sent to all faculty, staff members and students from the Emergency Response Team at Hurricane@utb.edu.

People will also receive information through text messaging if they are registered through the Campus Emergency Notification System. Contact information can be updated on UTB Online.

There are things departments can do to prepare for storms. Click here to view departmental hurricane plans.

The university has prepared a flyer to guide you on what to do in the event of a hurricane. Keep it for handy reference, for use before and after the storm.

Hurricane Preparedness

Hurricane Season
June 1 – November 30

Hurricane season begins June 1.

Do you know what to do if a hurricane threatens or hits the Rio Grande Valley? How will you know if the campus has been closed? After a storm passes, how will you know when to return to work or classes?

If a hurricane threatens and if the campus has to close, watch for the hurricane alert notices on the University's homepage. Notifications will also be sent to your university email account.

Departments should update phone numbers of all employees to have on hand for a departmental phone tree.

Return-to-campus notification will be posted on the university website, sent out via University email accounts, by text messages from Campus Police (to students and employees registered in the emergency notification system), and through the following local media outlets:
